1980 T&T wiring question.

Just trying to make sense of what I'm seeing in a new-to-me unit.

I've got the harness that clearly goes to the remote T&T box. I also have a separate pair of wires coming out. I'm assuming that's for a T&T gauge, but I can't exactly tell from the diagrams in the manual.

As an aside, any real advantage to switching to the T&T control box that mounts to the exhaust housing inside the cowling? The 1980 is the kind that mounts up inside the splash well.

What are the main wiring colours coming off of the trim motor? The 2 other wires, (smaller gauge I assume), run to the trim gauge.

It's not in front of me, but there's one bundle with a green (for sure), maybe a red, a white, could be one more - on inspection with the OEM manual in front of me, these all matched up with the group that goes to the control box. The two other "mystery wires" that look something like a lamp cord are their own bundle. I assumed they ran the trim gauge, but didn't see any mention of them in the T&T wiring diagram. (Notice I said didn't "see", maybe I need to look harder :) )

IW, is this a 3 wire motor with the solenoid in a junction box, a blue green and black wire coming off the trim motor? If it is, I believe the smaller gauge wires, (as long as they havent been replaced) will be brown/white and brown/black. The brown /white going to the "S" on the indicator guage, the brown/black going to the "G".

The two smaller gauge wires are both solid black and look just like lamp cord - webbed and joined in the middle. I haven't looked to see if they're solid or stranded yet. Maybe they were replaced.

Now that you've sparked my memory, 3 wires with the solenoid in a junction box and those particular colours (blue, green, black) is correct.

This will be the wiring diagram then, it is compliments of Ezeke. Ive never seen the gauge wires wired in that fashion before. Ezeke is pretty knowledgeable in this stuff, hopefully he jumps in.

Re: 1980 T&T wiring question.

That's the diagram I have. According to that one, it appears the black-black should be coming out of the solenoid box. In reality, its coming from the T&T assembly on the motor.

The question boils down to what's the item labeled "sending unit" on the diagram? If it's on the T&T assembly, then it gets run into the solenoid box and the gauge hooks into the box. If it's the gauge, then I still have two mystery wires coming from the T&T assembly that aren't on the diagram.

Edit:
The term "sending unit" appears on my diagram to only apply to one of the wires which is the cause for confusion. On this one it appears to refer to the whole unit, which suggests it's on the T&T. So, I guess the pair run into the solenoid box, and the gauge hooks into that.

The "sending unit", is actually the trim indicator mechanism, to let the gauge (and you) know the trim level of your motor when you are at the wheel. It is located on the port stern bracket.
