Ok, this issue is driving me crazy. I have a 1980 3.0 stringer. Over the winter I replaced the impeller and a gear with a couple teeth missing. I removed and cleaned the manifold, removed the cylinder head for inspection and had a cracked valve replaced and rebuilt the carburetor (Rochester 2 jet).
The boat starts fine and will idle decently at 550rpm in gear. When I apply throttle I get a couple hundred more rpm’s then nothing. I can’t get the boat up on plane. I can put the throttle to full open position and still it won’t gain rpm’s. The choke is functioning properly, I can visually see the fuel from the accelerator pump squirt as throttle is applied. Timing is set at 5°btdc and dwell is at 32°, the points were filed prior to setting timing and dwell.
I reset the valves using the cold method but I first cranked the engine until I had oil up the pushrods then set the valves. There is no clatter. I’m stumped at this point. Could it possibly be the power valve not working? Improper timing of the accelerator pump? The idle mixture screws were set to give maximum idle speed then the idle was reset to give me what I have now. The ignition components are pretty much new as the boat has only had about 5 hours runtime since replacing them a couple years ago.
The carb kit I used was an Echlin kit from Napa pn# 2-5494A. The kit does come with several gasket to cover different models but I matched them to the originals before installing. Float level and drop are set to spec. There is a slight bit of side play in my distributor hence the reason for setting the dwell at 32° to hopefully compensate for it.
When actuating the throttle at the dock, I can hear what to me sounds like a slight popping through the carburetor and although there is no load on the engine, it is still slow to pick up rpm’s.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to put as much information as possible out there to try get the issue solved.
