Hello all. I am finally turning to the forums after throwing in the towel on this project. I have a 1980 Mercury 150 V6. In short here is what is happening...
Motor will start and run/idle. There is 0 power out on the water. Full throttle gets me about 4mph and i smoke the entire lake out. Initially i thought the stator was bad and one half of the motor was not firing. I have noticed there is excessive fuel coming from the carb throats and milky as water may be coming into the fuel. No tell tale as well. Black sut looks to be coming out of exhaust and as well as fuel coming out the exhaust into the water creating the "rainbow" effect in the water.
BACK TO THE SHOP.
I noticed previous owner had the stator changed. Verified spark on all cylinders.. good on all 6. Rectifier looks clean not burnt up. I then turned to the enrichment valve on the side. New Lines and the motor seems to run well when the manual spinner on top is turned clockwise. Going clockwise will kill the motor completely. Verified it is working when it clicks when the key is pushed and fuel is flowing through the lines. Changed all plugs, i noticed the old ones are black and oily assuming too rich but didnt notice water on them which i thought potentially one of the head gaskets could have been leaking since fuel looked to be milky from carbs. Cleaned tank, new fuel, blew lines out, rebuilt all 3 carbs and checked float heights per the SOLEC manual. Compression tested 150 pounds on all 6. Changed thermostats and check the Poppett valve for obstructions was clear. Checked the lines from thermostats they get water but still none to the bottom hose where the tell tale comes out of motor. Replaced water pump housing, gaskets and impeller. Retested, same results. Fuel still looks milky, and i am getting very little response from throttle and tons of smoke. My carbs are non adjustable with needles from the outside. Only other thing i can think of is to re time the motor and that maybe the motor could be stuck in a "limp" mode as there is no overheat speaker on this boat. I am reaching out to see if there is any other things i could have missed as i am very new to these older outboards. I sincerely appreciate everyones input and time they are willing to spend to help me sort out what could be an issue. Thank you in advance!
