Re: 1980 johnson 35-hp lower unit removal

Yep....just removed mine on a 50 HP Johnson. If you look below the carbs, you will see a small bolt installed horozontally. This bolt goes through the hole in the top of your shift rod. The tip of the shift fod is flattened out and slides into a slot. (you'll see what I mean) with a hole in it that the bolt goes through. You will need to remove the bolt - not just loosen it, but remove it. I had to remove my starter in order to get to the bolt ( I believe it is a 7/16.). It was actually pretty easy once I learned how it holds the shift rod in place. However, reinstalling the lower really requires two people. One to install the lower, (insuring that you line everything up - especially the water pick up tube) the other to realign the shift rod through the slot and reinstall the bolt. I used a 1/4" extension with a universal next to the 7/16 socket. Make sure you remove the (5) bolts that hold the lower unit on.

thanks for the info but i looked at an exploded view and realized it was behind the intake screen on the lower unit, there is a nut to loosen and slide nut up to remove wedge that locks the shaft, little diferent than 50-hp but thanks very much, i can use the info,JRD
