Hello Gentlemen, I am due for carb maintenance and would like to install a tach to do a thorough job. I had a 1971 70hp chrysler on the boat for many year before the #2 cylinder lodged half the piston in the exhaust ports.... so now with a (kinda) similar 1980 chrysler 85hp charger I want to adjust the carbs with a tach instead of guessing what rpm I'm idling at. I have a factory ignition on this outboard. I'm confused how many poles my tach needs ro read per count? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love this motor as well as my older chrysler. Pleased with both, and I believe this charger motor has more in it with a proper tuning.

Thanks everyone

Is the factory ignition system the battery driven Magna Power system with a distributor or the Prestolite CDI ignition without a distributor?
If the first one type of ignition system with a distributor you need to count how many poles the stator has.
I think it has 20 or 12 poles then you have to find a tach that can handle this.
You can use a simple LCD tach that has a wire which you wrap the wire some turns on the spark plug.
You find them out on the market at many web sites.

Nordin and Topgun is right 12 pole.
Aftermarket tach might be hard to find.

Thanks guys! Yes is has the distributor ignition and has not been converted to a coil yet. Counting the poles is the confusion for me.. I will study up on a few videos to learn. I would like a traditional tack. The digital universal tach isn't my favorite.

Thanks again already

This is a new stator for your motor......count the poles all the way around.....there are 12 on this one.

For a traditional dash mounted tach I got mine from Faria Beede website. I also got a Tiny Tach on ebay just to verify rpms were correct......and they are handy to have when working on small engines.......

Need to clarify this statement......I found the tach I wanted on the Faria website but they don't sell them on there. You have to find a dealer or look on amazon, ebay, etc. Iboats supposedly sells them, but I couldn't find any when I looked. FYI.....

I was able to confirm the stator has 12 poles last night. I ordered a generic digital tach from ebay to get me by till I find the traditional dash mount I like the best. I will pull the carbs this weekend to check float height, clean thoroughly, new fuel stops, seats, and gaskets. Thanks again everyone! I will have it back in the water for the fall walleye bite here in northern Indiana!
