Hello everyone- I'm new to the boat buying world and am looking for a starter priced fixer upper cuddy. I've found a nice 24' century 6000 1980 that's going for a pretty low price. It has a water leak in the starboard manifold however and a some slight floor softness. I can't afford much, don't mind a few needed repairs, and am looking for only a few years out of a boat until I finish residency and get a salary. Anyone have any opinions on what kind of repairs this thing might need and if it might be a worthy buy? Thanks!

Century made great boats....however, floor softness is a sign of rot.....I'd pass in this one.

Thank you for the reply- would localized spots of rot be acceptable or would the cost of replacing several floor panels be pretty significant? As you can tell I'm a bit new to the game

I'm with 1980 Coronado- from what I've learned, the deck tends to be the LAST area to rot. Transom and stringers rot will mean a major effort/cost to repair, and you can't afford to just let it go. They ARE the structural integrity of the boat.

Tell us more about the waters where you intend to boat, and how you want to use it (activities). How many people will normally be aboard, and what's your budget? Like it or not, a 24' that only needs a few cosmetic, machanical and electrical repairs is still gonna cost you a certain amount of money.

Re: 1980 century 6000

I plan on using it in some of the larger NC lakes as well as the sounds/waterways. No offshore boating for me. I'm currently finishing up medschool and on a wincy wincy budget but want something to tool around in and spend a weekend on the water with. Likely no more than 4 on board at once and 95% of the time 2 people. Ideally I want something for 4 or so years until I can afford to upgrade. The ship looks in great condition, upholstery carpet all look great. Engine seems ok other than a small manifold leak. I want to grab it for 2400. For that little, would it be worth picking up? Thanks!

No one has mentioned the 32 year old I/O? That could be a money pit right there. We need more info on the power plant as well, but it sounds like you should pass already with the rot.

It's the mercruiser 260. Hmm I unfortunately (it sounds) put in a bid for 2000 already. I gues I'll just have to see what happens...

If the floors are soft, youre looking at a major restore of the super structure of the boat. Only you can decide if that is what you want to do.

No way to withdraw the bid? Unfortunately, at that price I think you have a good chance of winning it.
