I have a 1980 85 hp evinrude, I got it in a horse trade. I figured it had something wrong with it but it has great compression, good spark on all 4, timing seems to be right according to the number 1 cylinder and the markings on the flywheel. the previous owner was not a genius, a 2 inch big hole is cut in the exhaust housing I assume in an effort to get more HP. also I noticed that the intake manifold and linkage are not the original. So I am not sure what is going on. maybe they messed up the reeds or left them out all together?? When I try to start the motor it spins over good until it starts getting fuel, then it starts to strain to crank and will do a loud pop (backfire) which comes out of the exhaust. . that is all I can get it to do. any ideas?
