The motor is either 1980 or 81 70HP Chrystler... The problem is achiving high rpm while in gear. The motor will rev high in neutral. I bought the motor used 2 months ago from a dealer in Sanford FL and have had the same problem since the day of purchase. I have brought the motor back several times with no luck. Last time I was there they charged me $100 to custom make a pice of timing linkage they said was faulty which "steps up the timing". They told me it is somewhere at the top of the motor. I can't find it to verify they did anything. Anyone out there know which piece this is and where I can find it? The only linkage I can find is the throttle and transmission linkage on the side of the power head. They said they tested the boat in the water and it worked.... When I picked it up I tested it and I could only go about 10mph against the current.

Any ideas would be appreciated.... I would like to narrow down the problems before I bring it back again. They are charging me hourly rates + parts for a motor I was told worked and has not since I bought it.

The way to determine how the linkage operates, is to observe it,as you open the throttle up.
The engine doesn't have to be running for this, but it may need to be "bumped" with the starter to lign-up the gear train to begin with.
Watch the plate directly underneath the flywheel as you open the throttle. It will slide this plate hither and yon.
I understand the costs of the buisness end all too well, and "I feel your pain".
QUESTION: When you are at full-throttle,does the RPM seem normal? THe reason I ask is, if the engine seems to be reving properly, but you just can't gain any speed, the problem is the hub in your prop has spun-out, and the prop needs to be re-hubbed.

RPM sounds considerably lower when in gear and FULL throttle compaired to when I rev the motor in neutral. The last time I had the boat in the shop they replaced the prop with a used one... He says it's good, but he also says the engine is fine......

What am I looking for as I watch the plate slide back and forth?

What is the correct Tach setting for this motor? I have it connected, just want to make sure it's reporting correct info.

How can I tell if the linkage is adjusted properly? Is there a specific setting for this engine?

They make a Seloc manual that covers the link&sinc
for this motor...maybe your local library will have one...just a Thought

I can't help with the timing specs ,as I don't have the manual.
The timing advance must be checked as the throttle is advanced and running. Therefore, it takes two to check-n-set...One to pilot, one to wrench. And unless you have a test tank and test prop, you'll want to pick a very smooth day :p

If the settings are the same as later models, the ignition timing at WOT should be 32-BTDC

RPM will be 4750-5250RPM. If your prop has been changed out, make sure the pitch hasn't been increased from the old one.

Re: 1980/81 Chrystler Timing Issues

I have a 1979 Chrysler 70Hp Skier motor. According to the manual, the max rpm should be 4400 - 5100rpm. The 1980 model shows the same numbers and in 1981, the 70hp was not available. This is all according to the Seloc manual. The idle speed of your motor should be between 600 - 750rpm and the timing should be 32° BTDC @ WOT, just like 12footer said. My model number is 709H9A.

Hope this helps,

Dymo
