I have a 1980 7.5 Johnson that I use on the back of my sailboat to get me through the shipping lanes to where the open water is. After just having spent a samll fortune on overhaul at the mechanic, the thing got locked into reverse and I can't figure out how to fix it. I don't want to force it to much because that might spell certain doom. Anybody ever seen this happen? Is there something that I'm overlooking or is the sign to drop the cash a buy a new one? Any replies would be appreciated.

Welcome to iboats.

Sounds like you already crossed that bridge by overhauling it. I'd take it back and have them back it up. Might be a gearcase problem, but they should've eliminated that as a problem before they overhauled it. I'd back it...I hope they do. At the least, they should provide the labor if you pay for the parts. That'd be fair.

If you have to spend the money, get yourself a 4-stroke.
