1980 50hp merc died won't restart

my motor died recently and won't restart. I was trolling when out of the blue it conked out it momentarily restarted then died again it hasn't fired up since. it has spark, new plugs and is getting gas what should I look at next? any and all help much appreciated

If it is getting gas,has spark,and the spark is sparking at the right time, the engine should run.<br />My guess is,the pickup tube or jet in the carb is plugged. This is the most common thing to happen.<br />Try spraying some mix directly into the carb,and see if it sputters or starts.<br />If so, that's the problem. If not, get back to iboats,and we will try other stuff.

Has spark, wont pop even when fuel is sprayed into the carb.<br /><br />Well, to start it must have correctly timed spark, correct air/fuel mix into the cylinder and compression. So, what's left?<br /><br />Check your flywheel to ensure that it hasn't sheared the key and gone out of time. Check compression.<br /><br />If those both check out take a look at your reeds.<br /><br />Let us know what you find.

Im betting something is going on with spark.Hard to believe total failure of motor at idle speed.<br /> Try fuel mix in spark plug holes You should at least get sputter.If nothing and there is spark it must be timing.How do you check for spark.<br />Needs to be blue and snappy. If it seems lazy it may not work under pressure.

new plugs doesn't insure there is spark, of course. But if you are sure the plugs are firing, I would suspect water in the gas. Start with fresh fuel and see if there is a difference.

Hi I just bought a boat for my son and I . We have 40hp mercury 80s blue band. it started fine and ran for 10 mins then stopped. I found the breather in tank lid was blocked I opened it still nothing. I found filter dirty cleaned it still nothing I am not mechanic so friend said there was no compression on top cylinder.<br />I dont know what else to try there is spark and petrol. can you pass on any thing you might learn from here please I live in uk e-mail sylviasman132@aol.com thanks Dave
