I have a 1980 115 hp motor that has brand new plugs, wires, coils and 6a stator. For some reason it will spit and sputter at idle and then dye. Runs great at wot. Boat sat idle for 2-3 years needed steering cable just didn't get around to it till now. Motor fired on second try ran a bunch of sea foam through it and still the same. What would you try next?

Thanks, Greg

Forgot to mention all was replaced before the boat sat for 2-3 years. Still had same problem before boat sat.

Thanks, Greg

No you think that is the next step or is there something else? Just came in after running the motor on muffs and it idles just fine in the driveway starts by just turning the key when shut off on lake it dyes and the only way to start is choke and turn high idle lever up.

The idling problem may be what is called a "lean sneeze". It's a carb problem, not ignition. When the idle passages in the carb get restricted, the engine will run lean. Occasional miss/sneeze every few rpm's. Sounds like what you have. An overhaul of your carbs, including cleaning of the idle passages should do the trick. After the carb overhaul, set the idle rpm's at 650-750 when the boat is in forward gear and floating normally in the lake. Can't set it on the trailer.

Rebuilt the carbs haven't had it on the water did have it in the water at a boat ramp that I couldn't put the boat in the water and it idled perfect no sneeze at all. Hope when I get a chance to put it on the lake it does the same. Thanks Greg
