1979 mercury 80hp lower unit

Hello I have a 79 mercury 80hp my lower unit want shift into no gear shifter just turns can anyone help with want could be wrong is it cheaper to repair our try to find a used lower unit.

Trying to decipher, what you wrote.
You have a 1979 80hp Merc
It will not shift out of Neutral
Shift Lever, moves

Is the Shift Cable hooked up at the Engine
Does the Shift Cable move, when shift lever is rotated
Has the Gearcase recently been removed and reinstalled?

Agreed----Need to find out more details.----Any oil in the lower unit?----Stopped going forward out on the lake ?----Was lower unit off for water pump work ?

Bought boat never had it on lake hooked water hose to lower unit started engine no water coming from engine.bought new water pump took lower unit off and noticed the shifter would just turn cables hooked up to engine what I can tell cable is adjusted

When you took the Lower unit off, what gear was it in?
Was it still in that same gear when you reinstalled it?
"Gear shifter just turns" Are you referring to the Lever on the control box, or to the shift shaft?
When reinstalling the Lower Unit, you did get the Shift Shafts lined up?
