1979 Mercury 40 HP Elect Start - Stator Issue?

I just bought a '79 Merc Elect start 40 hp motor. Almost all parts have been replaced within past yr from previous owner....new water pump, new coils/cdi ignition, compression is perfect, control box excellent shape, etc. The only issue is 'assumed' that it may need a new stator. How do I check myself to test if the stator is good/bad?

Actually, if you just want to check to stator only that is fairly easy.

Over simplified here, but. there is only two parts to the stator, the coil pickup which fires the engine ignition system and the charging side. If you have spark the coil pickup is fine. If you do not have spark it does not mean that the stator is bad, could be something else, but if you have spark the stator is working.

The other side is the charging side. I am not sure on a Mercury, but when my evinrude stator charging side went bad I did the following: with the engine running I simply pulled the fuse and checked for output. Seems the manual should give you a easy way to check the charging side of the stator.

On a side note, not meaning to make this thread a market post, but I have a 1976 40 elec start that I have decided to tear down for parts. If you find the stator is bad let me know.

Just checking the stator should be easy, if that is all you want to check.
