I've picked up this motor - has good compression - someone replaced the lower unit - will be checking for spark etc. I'm thinking about getting it up and running. The only obvious problem so far is it isn't changing gear. The gear shift lever has very slight resistance to it, as it moves back and forth, but the gears are not shifting. I haven't rebuilt a motor like this before, so I'm wondering what advice anyone has about diagnosing the gear shift issue.

Take the lower unit off and see if the brass coupler by the water pump is connecting the upper and lower shift rods together. If that is correct then look at the phillips screw in the lower unit and see if it looks like somebody had it out.

A good old factory service manual would really help you.

Well, took a look using the spark tester in the dark - spark on both cylinders - I'll check the brass coupler tomorrow.
