I just upgraded my trolling motor to a 1979 Sea Horse 6 HP. 6R79E, it worked great for a few minutes at low speed then died. The ball was soft, after squeezing it fired right up again, I was able to troll by having someone squeeze the ball every 5 minutes...
So I rebuilt the fuel pump, and ran it with the outlet hose unhooked, it squirts fuel - I hooked it back up, same thing - ran great but died.
I now assumed the needle and seat were sticky in the closed position, and the pump just couldn't over power it.
Next I rebuilt the carb, everything seemed hunky dory, now it runs very rough - seems way fat but doesn't die...
I am suspect of the low speed needle adjustment, it was out 3.5 when I took it apart is that too much?
It seems to run fat even at high speeds.... I am about to give up and buy a brande new boat with a 4 stroke honda.......
