Hello,
My name is Chris and I am restoring a 1979 Glastron Carlson CVX-16 with a 90 horsepower 2 stroke Mercury. It's in pretty rough shape and will be quite a project, but I think it can be done in reasonable time.
My initial plan was to repair a few square feet of the deck under the rear seat which was rotted, and then rebuild, carpet, and upholster the interior. I kept finding more and more rot in the deck, so I eventually had the plywood tore up all the way to the front bulkhead. The hull is now uncapped and almost completely stripped. I am still debating whether or not I want to take on rebuilding the transom. It feels very solid, but the exposed portion feels slightly damp on the surface. When I removed the cap, some thin portions of the transom came off with it. I'll have to sand it down a little and inspect.
I'm currently working on estimating the amount of materials I will need to rebuild and glass everything. After quite a bit of research, I've decided to go with polyester resin and 1708 to glass the stringer. I'm not sure what I will use to glass the deck. I am still researching how to properly prep the existing woven roving to be fiberglassed over. It seems very porous, and I feel like I'm taking away too much of the glass when sanding down the resin. In some areas where I've air chiseled away the glue or epoxy used to attach the deck to the hull, I've found woven roving that appears to never have been saturated with resin. I am guessing I can glass right over this?
I have a lot of pictures of everything I've done so far, and as soon as I get to three posts I'll start putting them up. Obviously, this is my first boat restoration and I'm excited to share it. I'm also hoping that by having it online, someone with a lot more knowledge than me will chime in if I make a mistake. :thumb:
I enjoy seeing everyone's restoration threads and appreciate all the knowledge that's available here.
Thanks for reading,
Chris
