i have a dead cylinder problem that comes and goes. the top cyl. will be dead, boat barely on plane, and the 3rd cylinder suddenly comes to life and runs fine until i shut it off for awhile. i've had it in the shop twice and they can't find the problem. it does not do it everytime so it runs fine whenever it's in the shop. carbs have been rebuilt, new power pack, new coil on the dead cyl only, new fuel pump last year. it is not getting fire to the plug, i have tried to check wiring etc. no luck. what about stator, rectifier, magnet. what else should i look for? thanks for any help.

The Stator or loose magnet can cause this, and so far, you are on-track. Don't be too rough on the mechanic,as it sounds like he took the right course. Those coils and packs are not very easy to diagnose, and the best way,is to "swap them out".
But if the stator (can be tested) is ok, and the magnets are all there, and intact, also look at the flywheel shear key and the key-way for breaks, knurled edges ,bending or warpage.

------------------
Quater Horse; The kiddy ride in front of K-Mart.

i will check under the flywheel and see how things look. i found some info on the stator that says if the values in the wiring are good but there is cracking, discolored potting compound, liquid leaking out, that it is no good. i have all of the above. i'll give it a closer look before buying a stator though. thanks
