Hey buddy, don't be sick for too long. Summer is coming! Will we be ready????

Yah, I don't think so either.

Ah well, we could always go bowling or something.

Happy Monday, rats.

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Got a few things done this past weekend. I have my seats all rounded off, sanded down, and apart so I can start epoxying them tonight. I also got some more Gluvit down on the hull.

I am going to hang my kicker right on the transom instead of raised up the way it was so I pulled the lower unit yesterday which has a 5" extension. It should be easy to convert, the only part I will need to get is a shorter driveshaft. I could shorten it myself if I want to spend the time. The shift rod can easily be shortened as well as the water tube. It was nice to see it shouldn't be too big a deal and won't cost much.

Are you going to hang the kicker on the port side? If so you will need to lift the kicker a few inches so the steering rod on the main can clear the kicker. Some guys around here bolt a plastic kicker mount to their transom to lift it a few inches to get the clearance. My buddy added three inches of wood to the top of his transom to do the same thing. He also shaved the side of his transom on the port side to give him some added room so his kicker motor could turn full lock to lock. We also ground down the kicker motor for a little added clearance. His project turned out great and he can lift either motor without removing the tie bar that is attached to the front of the motors.

GLG, you have me thinking maybe I'm jumping the gun here. The kicker came on the boat on the port side raised up 5" above the transom on a "home made" wood bracket that was not pretty and had some rot. My transom seems to be wider than most boats i've seen (maybe for twin mains?). If you look at the pictures below you can see the steering shaft sticking out and I believe the main engine is at full lock. It does look like it could get close (maybe hit) the kicker if the kicker was down on the transom. I may hold off now on shortening my kicker until I have the main back on the boat. Thanks for the heads up!

Yup that?s why she is raised like that, to give clearance for steering. When I helped my buddy replace his transom on his holiday we change the kicker from the starboard side to the port side. And of coarse that?s when we learned about the steering clearance issues. Glad you did get a chance to post your idea and I could comment on lessons I learned. Makes this whole thing about sharing on the Internet worthwhile. Starmada and iboats are the place to be for these Starcrafts. Now if it would just warm up around here I could get back to fishing with mine.

Yeah, EZ, I like that setup. Seems I would have just as much transom room as that boat does. We'll have to wait and see.

Tonight I epoxied all my new back to back seat pieces. One more night of some touch ups and going around the edges again and I can put these behind me. These were a ton of work and I'm glad they are almost done.

The upholsterer commented that my bases will last a 100 years. I've got a feeling yours will last too. They were more work than it originally looked that's for sure.

Do you have any pics of your interior pieces yet?

Panther Marine sells the plastic kicker mount if your going to need one,..

Also I have seen many kicker to main engine steering connectors made out of threaded rod using air line end thingamajiggers for quick disconnects,...Just wrap the threaded rod with duck tape or electrical tape so as to avoid shape edges,...

I'm about to hyjack your thread again here, but I was going through some old emails and saw a boat I had contacted on. It was an 18' SS V-5, if I would have known better I would have been there to buy it in a couple minutes .

It reminded me of your V-5 so I had to stop by, and see how things were going for you. Glad to see your seat bases are coming along! Those will sure be sturdy. Can't wait to see everything all back together and in the water, you really have a sweet boat. A tad jealous still here...:D

I dropped off my jump seats today and picked up a couple of pieces sitting there. My lounge seats as well as gunwale supports and crossmember were done but din't have room to pickup the lounge seats.

Here are some shots of the crossmember with the sepakers installed in it. I'm hoping to get some stuff bolted in the boat next week when it gets above zero here :)

Hello DJ. Nice resto going. Looks like you have some good carpentry and "tin knocker" skills.

I have a 16 foot SS that I'm in the planning stages of for restoration. I have seen you post on other resto threads regarding the bottom side paint and of course wanting to get it right the first time as we all do. I am curious as to what you may have decided. Any final decisions at this point? I am going with Pettit Easypoxy for topside paint but don't think this a good choice for me for bottomside. I leave my boat in the water for 1 week periods throught the summer. Roll and tip is how I will apply.

All help is much appreciated.

Hi, and thanks for the compliments. My boat is going to be painted by a pro (auto restorer). They are going to use a 2 part epoxy primer which they said has great adhesion to aluminum and the bottom is going to get a top coat of industrial enamel. The sides and top will get automotive paint. My boat will not be left in the water for long periods of time. They thought the industrial enamal will be durable for the bottom.

Check out Sprintst (one post abouve yours here). I think what he has on the bottom is some of the best there is, and I believe it only comes in white. It's called VC Performance epoxy by Interlux.

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Started working on my deck this weekend. It was nice to work in the driveway Saturday.

I was able to use my old deck as templates, but I am going to run the pieces widthwise instead of lengthwise like it was. This will give me a deck with less seams and I will have one inspection port for the fuel tank sender. The original deck allowed full access to the entire fuel tank. I was scratching my head for a little bit because I was also measuring things to be sure and things weren't adding up. Anything look odd in this pic:

IMG_3132.jpg

Yeah, in order for the measurements to add up I had to have the left piece upside down when I traced it. Apparently it was installed upside down originally. I don't remember, but it couldn't have fit very well.

Test fit:

Then went back and cut the locker door:

IMG_3138.jpg

I also dropped the fuel tank in so I could get a location for my sender inspection hatch. The fuel inlet sure doesn't line up very well with the hole in the stringer. I am going to move the crossmember forward 3/4" so the fill hose won't be stressing the tank elbow. I am going to drill an additional hole for the vent line.

IMG_3139.jpg

Once I get all the deck pieces fit I will epoxy them and also finish gluvit on the hull. I hope to put her in the water next weekend to verify she doesn't leak. Then I can foam it and fully install the deck. After that the splashwell goes back in and I think it will be ready for paint.

Question, my trim (rubrail channel) needs some tlc. I know Lakelover had a good process for cleaning it up. Should I have the boat painted with all the trim on and masked, or put all the trim on after paint? Has anyone coated their trim with anything after cleaning it up?

Good work dj! Yah, that sun on Saturday was sweet!

Here's my plan for the trim...

Get it all buffed out, cleaned up, looking good, all the way to finish stage. Then I'll tape it off leaving the very inside edge exposed to be painted. By having that painted along with the gunwale it's basically sealing it up so water won't find it's way in.

Now in your case, since your rails are off (I don't think you put em back on yet) you can just have them paint and then put them back on after you have them all cleaned up.

I think the key is not to try and clean up the rails (with them installed) after the boat has been painted. I know I for one would muck up the new paint job.

Cheers buddy

Why yes I was online at work, it's called lunch! You on the other hand must get like 3 hours for lunch :D as I only get a 1/2 hour, It's how I get all my boat part shopping done.
