Hi All,

I have a 1979 115 tower that was originally a power tilt and trim motor. When i bought the motor, the tilt and trim was going bad and sagged quickly. I removed the cylinders and pump from the motor and installed a CMC pt-130 power tilt/trim unit and have been completely satisfied with it. However, now that there is no factory cylinders installed, i have to be very careful when i shift into reverse not to give the motor too much power or it will tilt itself up. Is there a place where i can install shear pins or something similar in order to keep the motor from tilting up when shifted into reverse? I considered welding the original cylinders solid and reinstalling them, but i would like to have the safety feature of the shear pins in the event of an underwater impact with the motor.

Thanks,
Alex

Ayuh,.... Can ya retrofit a set of shocks off an older motor,..??

I ain't sure whether the '79s used the lift cylinders like the ole shocks, or whether the tilt/trim had already gone to the self-contained units,...

I have a 1979 inline 115. It came with manual tilt and I found and bought a used trim and tilt on Ebay. So I installed it and it works fine except on one of the trim cylinders I screwed up and stripped a hose connection hole and need another trim cylinder cause it drips oil a bit. I still have the two original shocks I took off and the reverse lock thingy I took off of the motor. If you have still have your old tilt cylinders maybe we could do some horse trading and help us both out? By the way my '79 is the first year with no distributer and the trim and tilt is the one with the pump inside the boat and hoses running to the trim cylinders.

Added: If you are at all interested I could take a picture if what I have and post it. It's my STBD cylinder that's leaking.

yeah, thats the same setup that was originally on my boat, id have to do some digging around to see if i still have the cylinders, they may have been discarded during a shop cleanout, i do not remember for sure. Thanks for all the help, guys
