Properly propped for a maximum of 5800 RPM, The motor will run about 14 gallons per hour at WOT. That's a fairly typical ratio for carbureted 2 stroke outboards.

Everything else depends on setup, prop pitch, hull condition etc.

I can lose 20% efficiency in rough water when I have to use more trim for control while staying on plane.

Guessing that everything is in good shape, properly rigged and that you can hit 5800 RPM anytime you want to, maybe half if you are comfortably on plane and trimmed right.

I absolutely respect the Mako, and would take one to sea anytime. I also think the 140 crossflow is as good as any motor in its class because a backyard mechanic can keep it running nearly forever with a factory service manual and the right tools.
