1978 Stinger 75

Hi I have a 1978 stinger 75 that i recently purchased the previous owner said that he could never get the boat over 7 mph he had the carbs rebuilt the coils wires and plugs fuel tanks and fuel lines up to the motor replaced. I started messing with it and found the the fuel line inside the hood was collapsed so i replaced it took to the lake fired it up and it ran great i shut it off and had a hard time starting it it cranked fine and then it fired but everytime i went to put it in gear it died even after it was warm i still had to put it on fast idle and choke it to get it to start any ideas on what might cause this thanks in advance justin

I wouldn't take the previous owner at his word on the "carbs were rebuilt" part of it. Take them off. Take them apart. I'm betting one or more of them are gummed up. With no load, that motor will run in neutral and sound "fine" one two, and maybe even one cylinder, but once you put it in gear it will stall with a load on it. Also, check for spark and check compression in all three cylinders. My 1980 Stinger 75 punches my compression gauge to the 140 mark in all three holes, so yours ought to be in that ballpark...
