I'm new to this forum, and forums in general. I have a 1978 Starcraft Seafarer 14 and it's titled with HID# as STR090510678. I've searched the internet through and through including this website (iboats) and what little I can find states that the MAX HP is 30HP. My capacity plate is gone. This boat has been in my family since around '93 or '94 and the plate has never been there. So my question is, can someone confirm that the max hp for this boat is in deed 30hp, becuase Im really wanting to upgrade to a 25hp from my 9.9. The transom has only one brace, and some of the things I read about earlier models with the one brace eluded to 20hp max hp. So it's a so confusing to me. Can someone please help. Thanks in advance.

I am not positive but 20 hp sounds about right for that boat. Have you looked through the "sticky" with the brochures, lots of good information there.

If you are referring to that one thread that has all of the brochures from the 60's through current, yes I have reviewed that. But when I click the link for 1978 that brochures doesn't list the Seafarer searies, unless there is something I'm over looking. I saw a thread where someone noted that had contacted Starcraft and got a new capacity tag, does anyone know how I go about doing that?

Nope Starcraft won't deal with that sort of thing. It nearly impossible to contact them actually.

Some guys have found companies that can make you a new capacity plate as a decal and you can stick it on a piece of alum.

Hmm, to do that I would need to have all the pertanent information. I wonder if I could use the same information in the pictures of the link you provided. Again, I have seen information here in iboats stating that my year/make/model is a max 30hp.

I don't know how much or if they may have changed the design at all, but my '03 SF14 is rated for 30. I have a 20, which is plenty for me. It will do 29 with just me on board.

Hull weight is 225 lb., capacity is 920, length is 14'3", beam 67".

Don't know if this will help or confuse you more.....I have a 1965 Seafarer 14' which has 1 brace on the transom. I called Starcraft last year and got a capacity plate from them for 30 bucks. See attached pix. The max Hp. in 1965 was 40Hp (Probably for a 2 stroke). I run a 1975 'rude 9.9 on the tinny now, just for fishing and crabbing in a bay. I would think that you would be safe with a 25Hp. from the info I have read on the forums and Starcraft brochures. Just remember a 4 stroke generally has more weight than a 2 stroke. Just my 2cents....good luck and have fun.brace.jpgcapacity.jpg

Seriously? Wow, that's awesome!

When I "call Starcraft" I am automatically connected to my local dealer (which almost always results in disappointment).

"hey Joe, it's that weirdo up in Michigan with all the old boats on the line again"

"no problem, just patch him to a dealer, that'll fix him"\

Yea, "seriously" ( see attached photo of the plate from Starcraft in old post). I guess some people do not want to pay the 30 bucks as they "can make their own" from from other sources. Anyway...I have been the route of Starcraft sending me to a dealer which results in a big diappointment as you mentioned. I was just more pro-active in looking for Starcraft phone numbers back then. Maybe I just lucked out (should have played the lottery that day also!). Anyway.... try this number 574-831-2103, and you may get the capacity specs or order the plate for your boat (if your lucky). If not do some more web surfing for other Starcraft customer service numbers. If they will not make the plates any more, I would think that they can give you the capacity specs for your Starcraft. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks, all. I went ahead and bought an 81 Evinrude 25HP. I'm in the process of getting it up and running. I also, called the number noted above and got ahold of Steve Hodge at Smokercraft and he sent me the Replacement Capacity Plate form; see attached. I'm awaiting my new plate.
