1978 mercury outboard

I am new to boating. I was given a 1978 Mercury 1150 (115 hp). I know it needs a new wiring harness, but how do I determine whether it is 2 stroke or 4 and efi or carb or anything else I might need to know? I told you I am new to boating.

No such thing as a 4 stroke in 78.-----No such thing as EFI in 78.-----You can clearly see the 3 carburetors at the front of the motor.-----Do a complete evaluation before spending hard earned money on this motor.

A 1978 Merc 115HP will have a battery powered CDI ignition with a single coil and distributor and 6 cylinders. I would recommend you verify this as years of motors get mixed up all the time. 1979 1/2 saw the changeover to 6 coil distributor less ADI ignition.

Jumper the starter and take a compression test. If that is good and the gearcase is good, the motor may be worth repairing.
