Since you have low charging voltage and tach problems going to bet your rectifier/regulator module is amiss. The grey wire from the regulator powers the tach and it counts the rectified AC pulses from the stator.

Get a picture of both sides of one of your carbs. Want the left (port) side looking forward. There IS a brass low speed adjustment needle with a stainless steel spring around the shank on your carbs.

I will do that tonight when I get off work. not sure which wire you're referring to when you talk about the rectifier/regulator. there are more wires on this thing than I ever would have believed.

In addition to the upper bearing, check the flex plate on the flywheel as a possible cause of the noise. They have been known to crack where it bolts to the hub.

got the upper bearing delivered, haven't had the time to tear into the powerhead to replace it. I noticed the other day that the tach completely stopped working and the motor wasn't charging at all. the battery will take a charge from a charger so I know its not the battery. now im not afraid to tear into this but it just strikes me as odd that up until I took the boat into a mechanic to get the carbs rebuilt, everything worked right. is it possible that wires didn't get hooked up? but the boat will still run? I'd hate to replace this motor for simple issues but this can cause me some issues this year with several multi-night camping trips planned on the river.
