First time poster alert! just so you know,

I have a 1978 85hp Johnson Outboard. I am looking for info on how to adjust or tighten the warm up lever on the control box and if the knob just above the key is an idle adjustment?

Also wondering if anyone has any ideas on a back spray problem while at full throttle, I have it mounted on a 16' 1972 Starcraft fiberglass closed hull. this was not the original motor it had a blown 85 merc that I removed. I had the marina mount the Johnson with a CMC Poweer Tilt and trim unit a 6" set back. At full throttle the spray comming up around both sides of the motor is crazy. I have read that it's due to the motor being mounted to low and the cav plate is not aligned with the bottom of the hull.

If I try and have it raised it will require another set of holes in the transom. That would make 3 sets of mounting holes and my concern is it will weaken it to much. I also cant afford a jack plate... am I screwed or does anyone know any tricks? sorry for such a long post any help or advice would be great. Thanks

Re: 1978 Johnson 85hp Outboard Adjustments Question

Knob is typically throttle lever friction adjustment, if single lever control.

Are there mounting holes in the motor bracket? When you replaced motor, did you check shaft length? You may have incorrect shaft length for your boat.
