Hello all,

I have a 1978 Johnson 70EL77 70HP motor and Friday I bought a new fuel pump because the rebuild kits are on backorder. The fuel pump that I bought is P/N 438559. I brought the pump home and checked it against the old one and it is not an exact match. There are only two nipples coming out of the pump and not three like my old one. I think that the third nipple is for the vacuum line.

Here is a link the the Evinrude page that shows the third nipple:
http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=a43b54d7f0aaae960399c3983468378d

Evinrude also gives the P/N 438559 as an optional part number for the pump.

Should I:

1) Take part back and request pump with the vacuum nipple?
2) Cannibalize parts from old pump and make semi-new part?
3) Wait for iboats.com to not have item backordered?

Thanks in advance,

Mathieu

I sorry this is a 1977 Johnson 70 and not a 1978.

Thanks,

Do I need to have the vacuum line attached in order for the motor to run?

On the outside of the New fuel pump has a sticker that says 438562 25-F-X. The part number that is on the outside of the box is 438559. I did some cross referencing and found that this may be the wroing part in the right box. Which engine does a 438562 fuel pump belong?

Re: 1978 Johnson 70 fuel pump

you have to have pulse line, that is what powers it.

these are correct:
Part Number: 0385784
Description: FUEL PUMP AY
Pack Qty: 1
Dimensions: 3.50 x 3.50 x 2.25 (in)
Weight: 0.44 lbs
Equivalent Parts: 0395712,0398385,0433390,0438559

this sierra will also work, it the aftermarket replacement. http://www.iboats.com/Sierra_18_735...z.36857--**********.363252044--view_id.174138

newer models that have the pulse boss and pump mount to the side of the block, the pulse hole is on the back of the pump. see the hole between the mount holes.
