Hi all,

I have just replaced my flywheel as teeth were missing and once I completed the job motor would not start, just backfire.

The old flywheel key had sheered off, god knows how long ago but motor started and ran well for last last 8 years since I bought boat and replaced stater. Probably done close to 400 hours during this time doing regular services myself and replacing 2 power packs. Motor has been an absolute winner considering age.

I read many forums here including the secret files :) and was convinced my timing issue had to be related to my flywheel key ( fitted new one ) but after checking it 3 times it was not the problem.

After spending 2 days checking wiring, carbs etc and not being able to sleep I decided to change the coil leads around and presto motor started and runs perfectly.

To my amazement the coil leads had never been altered in the last 8 years and new flywheel I fitted was identical to the old one. Same OMC part number.

Anyway its a huge relief old girls up and running again and I would like to express my gratitude to all that provide the in depth information here. I very much doubt I could of fixed problem with out it.

Would say the leads where backward when you got it to compinsate for the out of whack flywheel.
