1978 140 hp mercury stator question

Is the only function of the stator on this motor to charge the battery a supply voltage to the electrical components? It only has two wires couldnt imagine it being part of the spark system at all

A two wire stator on the distributor ignition motor only functions to charge the battery, via the rectifier.

Ok. My stator wire is corroded where it goes in so im goin to buy a new one and the cdi is alot cheaper than oem thats why i was askin
