My first motor cycle was a Goldwing, my first boat was a 21' bayliner trophy with a hardtop cabin similar to the one your looking at. If I had found a bigger one like yours for the right price i would have jumped on it. Ans as for the bigger or smaller concerns it just takes practice. If you dont have any experience boating I do suggest you take some safety classes. the biggest suggestion I could make on your fisrt outing is take an experienced boater out with you, someone who has operated larger vessels. Then take the boat out to deeper water and practice practice and practice. I love lkoking at the big older vessels still operating on the St Lawrence River.

My first boat was a SeaRay 268. It's a lot of boat for routine hauling, launching, and recovery. Once we put it in a slip for the season, and eliminated that part, things got a little easier. There was quite a learning curve on docking it, but just go slow, and expect adventures for a while. With some sort of boating class, or read Chapmans Piloting from cover to cover, you can learn alot. It's nice to have a boat that size on the Great Lakes.

Re: 1977 Starcraft Cabin Cruiser 25'

OK, so I went and checked it out Friday and here's what I saw with my inexperienced eye. Hull seemed solid, floor seemed solid except one soft spot when stepping down into the cabin area, needs interior work, but it's usable, side panels of the deck are missing, supposedly wet, transom seemed solid, engine fired very quickly and ran and revved smoothly, gauges seemed to all work. I believe it's lake-worthy, but will need some cosmetic work. Apparently I misunderstood him when he said it was docked, he said he lives near the dock, boat was not in water. It seems like an overall solid vessel, but in some serious need of cosmetics for the cabin and deck.

So now, after looking at some of the threads (specifically sprintstr) that I may have a huge project on my hands and not know it. I would definitely make him take me out on it before I buy, but I just don't know. I really do like the big ole tin can (my name for it) but not sure. May have to look at somewhere where I can store it indoors for the winter to work on it, hate to waste the summer if it runs good and floats well.

Opinions?

Hello, I am totally new to boating and do not have a boat yet. I was looking for advice, I am going Friday to look at a 1977 Starcraft Cabin Cruiser 25' with an inline 6 165Hp engine. Owner says it's water ready and is in fact docked. What are some things I need to beware of with this particular model or in general? I am attaching the photos from the ad.

I appreciate any help or advice you all can give!

Thanks in advance

Did ya water test her? See a bunch of boats that sound great out of the water but flopped when in the water.

I would recommend a Hull Survey or bring someone with restoration/major repair experience. This link has some certified folks up by you. http://www.boatus.com/insurance/glsur.asp

Takes me about 27 hours to do a transom on an aluminum Lake Erie boat (<20')

I didn't get to water test her, but that was going to be my next suggestion was let's take her out on the water and if all is good we got a deal. The boat is up in the Toledo area, so if there's anyone experienced at restoring that wants to come along, i'm sure you'll be welcome! But I think i'm in the "get it" mindset, as long as she floats ok.

Being aluminum she should float okay. Think of all the aluminum rowboats sitting out in the weather next to farm ponds year after year; it's just a bigger version with upholstery. About the only problems i can think of as far as the hull goes is it may have some loose rivets, but that is easily resolved by rebucking them and adding a little gluvit; unless there are major issues with corrosion. A good run test will reveal any issues with the outdrive/engine though, so it definitely won't hurt.
