I have a 1977 Dolphin boat with an OMC 120 I/O in it. I bought a new engine for the boat but I am having trouble getting the old engine out. I have the whole engine unattached except for the steering because i have no clue how it comes off. Looking at all of the manuals I have, it does not show how to get the steering removed. Is there a trick to getting the steering off? Any help will be very appreciated, thanks

unbolt rear cable drum bracket from intermediate, remove or at least slide out of way plastic cover from rear cable drum assembly, have a person steer until the screw comes around (slot), remove screw from rear cable drum, go to rear of boat and remove outdrive, pull trucourse steering shaft and gear rearward while helper catches the wave washer and other bits that will fall. remove cable.

I take it that you are trying to remove the engine and the intermediate housing as one unit? If not, there is no need to disconnect the steering drum.

Awesome, thanks a lot. We got it pulled and dropped the new engine in.

It;s a good time to lubricate that 37 year old TruCourse cable. If it is not giving you resistance now. it will soon enough.
