Re: 1977 Johnson Tilt and Trim -could use troubleshooting advice

Ok.. the Modle Number is: 115EL775

I think I answered ezeke's question incorrectly. I blame this on me being a newbie and kinda dumb. The tilt motor is mounted to the left of the transom brackets, not between. I am sorry for the confusion. (does that indicate I have a motor with a long shaft?)

The motor replacement did not go well last night. After replacing the broken brush spring I noticed that when my neighbor had helped me take apart the top of the tilt motor both ground wires had been disconnected. I thought this would be pretty easy to fix by clamping them to the top brass using a coper wire. However, when I when to hot test the red/blue wires I found a couple of bad things.
1. all 3 wires (red/blue/black) all showed having 12v
2. When I grounded the black and tried to hook up the red/blue it would spark. I dont know much about electricity but I figure that cant be good
3. Suspecting a short I took the motor apart again and made sure to electrically tape up all connections, but I broke the top of the cylinder putting it back together (cracked the pewter metal, yeah as I said.. I am dumb) :-(

So it looks like I am going to have to get a replacement (drat).
The one I am currently thinking about is:
http://www.boatmotors.com/mall/part...gd_poid=187583&gd_row=71&**********=576508707
(if that is the wrong part and you dont mind letting me know I would appreciate it before I spend all my inheritance on it )

But I am going to check around for a used pump or some place that might be able to fix what I hosed up :)

Sometimes a picture is worth 1000 words so I attached a pick of what the motor looks like right now without the lower tansom bracket on.

Anway, I hope to update with good news after getting the part.

Maxrules.com ezeke, i actually just ordered a couple units off him last month, i paid with pay pal and he sent them to me asap. Very trustworthy guy, and cheap. I reccomend him. Spenc make sure you refer to the wiring diagram that Ezeke provided, it will point you in the right direction for the wiring. The only wires running to ground should be the 12 gauge black wire coming from the motor, and the 16 gauge balck wire coming from the solenoid. The smaller 16 gauge wire coming off the unit is for your trim gauge.

ezeke thanks for letting me know its a 20"

I took the trim motor today to an alternator shop and they are going to call me Monday with the cost for a rebuild.

I followed the diagram (althought I have not checked the trim gauge on the dash yet) and I have a question. When I click the top trim switch the solenoid does not click, but that makes sense based on the diagram ( I think ... without the trim motor in place) My question is to confirm if that is correct.
Based on the diagram:
green/white when pressed - no solenoid click
red/white when pressed - solenoid click
-----------------
Thought I would be lake ready Monday, but now I am having a starter issue as well :-( I introduced some problem today so I created a thread on http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=223144

I did order the manual: Johnson Evinrude Outboard 60-235 HP Repair Manual1973-1991" based on HighTrims suggestion as this wiring diagram for the trim has been very helpful I thought the same type of diagram for the starter/ignition would be in the manual as well.

The good news is that lights, horn, impeller and aerator are all working so I am getting there slowly but surely :)

ok.. that is good news. At lest I appear to have the trim wired correctly as it does not tie into the ignition system at all :)

Update: I have tilt and trim.

After getting the rebuilt trim motor and following your advice on how to correctly wire and fill the motor, I am pleased to report I now have a the power trim working. Thank you so much for the wiring diagram. I could have never completed this project without it. Thanks for all the advice, tips and suggestions.

Project Cost:
Trim Motor Rebuild - $69.00

Re: 1977 Johnson Tilt and Trim -could use troubleshooting advice

Hello All,
Thanks for all the effort I see being put forth by each of you to help us new people better understand our boats. I recently purchased a 19 foot 1972 Thunderbird with a 1978 Johnson 115 Hp V4. I had it out Wednesday afternoon and my throttle stuck. I had tool and a neighbor (on a second boat) with me. He towed my back while I took the Johnson Command center some what apart. I was able to unstick the throttle and get the lever back into the neutral position. The engine started but I could not get the engine rpm up past idle and then it stopped and would not restart. Prior to this I have had no problems with the engine. I want to disassemble the command center but would like some kind of manual or parts breakdown so I make sure it all goes back together again. I picked up the trim wiring that was posted. THANKS! I do not have a problem their. Looked like it could be useful one day. Any help with my command center would be appreciated.

God bless You!
Rick

Re: 1977 Johnson Tilt and Trim -could use troubleshooting advice

Hey Rjcuraj,
I am not sure if this came up in this or another thread, but one of the guys pointed me over to the BRP catalog and under the year model's section of "Remote Control" there is an excellent diagram of the Johnson Command Center

http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

Just a heads up on taking that command center apart. I made the mistake of leaving the throttle lever in place and when I slid the entrie thing off a small ball poped out . Based on what I saw in other threads the best way (and what I used last night when I rebuilt the command center) was to remove the hex bolt in the center of the throttle lever, then the warm up leaver and then the caseing etc.
