1977 Johnson Starter (clicking)

I have a 1977 Johnson - Electric start. It was cranking slowly (but eventually starting and then running fine). Became progressively worse/slower cranking. Now, it will not start or turn, but makes a rapid clicking noise. Any thoughts regarding the source of the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Probably the contacts inside the starter solenoid. Try jumper cables direct to the starter. If it turns over fast, that solenoid probably probably needs to be replaced.

We will assume you started by ensuring that the battery is fully charged and load tested?

Common problem, many times caused by a problematic battery, or loose/corroded connections. Take them all apart, not just look at them, and file them to a shine, then re tighten. This includes at the battery, solenoid, starter and especially engine ground. You then need to inspect the wiring. If it has any nicks, cuts, abrasions, or if it "crunches" when you flex it, it needs to be replaced. Voltage drop testing is the best method for troubleshooting this, let us know if you need help with this. If you follow emdsapmgr's test that he mentioned, and it still doesnt spin over fast, the starter may need to be rebuilt or replaced. That of course assuming that the battery and cables that you are using for his test are adequate.

If it is beyond what we mentioned, time to dig deeper.

It sounds like your battery isn't up to the task anymore.
