We are in the process of rebuilding the trim and tilt cylinders for our 1977 85HP Johnson Outboard motor.

As we were taking it apart, we noticed that the "Bobbin" on the cylinder with the electrical hook up had a small wire that almost looked like it was soddered to the piston. That wire was broken off. Does anyone know what that connection does?

Thanks a bunch in advance! :)

P.S. We have diagrams and what not, and are very confident in what we are doing, we are just unsure of what this connection does.

If it is the wire I believe you are refering to it is for the tilt trim gauge.

Ok, so would this be why our trim would go so far up that the cylinders would pop out of their housing? This actually happened to us once so we began trimming very carefully as to not pop the cylinder out again, because that was just one giant mess as you could imagine!

If not, what would cause that to happen?

If the cyl's popped out you have something else wrong. The wires you're talking about were for your trim gauge only.
