Hello and thank you first of all for any help you may provide. I'm new to this so bare with me. I have a 1977 70hp Johnson. I recently installed a new/Used LU from a boat repair shop in my town that pressure tested and filled with new gear oil. My old LU chewed the forward bearing and was ticking, didn't lock up so that's why it was replaced. I have read allot of the postings on here along the same lines of my issue but nothing I can find is exactly what I'm looking for so excuse me if I'm beating a dead horse. I installed the new LU and I'm having issues getting the shift linkage correct. I measured the shift shaft and have that set correctly on the LU. I'm able to shift into forward and neutral or reverse and neutral just not all 3 at the same time when the cables are adjusted. I'm also able to shift by hand with shift cable disconnected at motor all 3 gears with no issues. I have had it in the water with the forward gear and it runs great at top speed also did this in reverse to make sure new LU had good gears. When I adjust the shift cable I cannot get the gears to align together no matter what I've tried. It has a new shift cable approx 3 yrs old and shifted fine on the old LU. It seems that the shift cable just doesn't have that 1/4 of an inch to shift it just a bit further in forward or reverse when adjusted to where I can move prop by hand and hear it grind forward and reverse. No matter where I adjust the shift cable at the motor I cannot make up the difference at for the 2 gears. I also cannot make up the difference with the off white clear plastic deal that screws on the bolt going to the shift cable that hold the shift rod that moves the shift shaft up and down for the gears. Any help is appreciated and sorry about the long novel.
