Re: 1977 Evinrude 85 hp

I realized after a friend pushed the throttle down. That I notice none of the cam and cam follower marks aligned up. I adjusted it to align up gets on plane a lot faster now but it still seems off

i had a similar issue with one of my 85's. after going half crazy i simply cleaned all all the ground contacts on the coils and shazaam, my issue was solved. maybe you will get lucky with that and save a few bucks. it is at least worth a shot as it costs no more than the time it takes to do it. i used an angle head grinder with a pad like a "scotch brite" (available at napa for around a buck a piece) like you would do dishes with and got them shiny clean.

Bombardier only recommends Champion plugs in their engines. Your best bet is to stick with the one that the factory reccomends. Either QL77JC4 or L77JC4. One small thing to double check. When you move the throttle to full forward (WOT), are the carb butterflys completely open (flat/horizontal) in the carb throats? This is a visual check you can do-have to take the airbox cover off to check it. Those butterflys can get misadjusted so that they overrotate in the carb bodies.

It runs a lot smoother with the ngk plugs than the champions.WOT both blades are horizontal.

Thanks for the tip I am going to try that now. I got some old red scotch brite pads laying around.
