1977 Evinrude 35hp Corrosion

I just picked up 3 E-rude/ Johnson 35hp motors. I paid $250 for them and other parts were included. One is a 1983 in good shape. The others are 78 and 77 with low compression. I just pulled the head off of the 1977 because it is a complete motor and in better shape than the 78. I had plans of repairing it but I am not sure if it is worth trying. There is deep corrosion in water jacket, getting close to cylinder. Will these deep pits cause a blown head gasket if I fix this motor up. The head gasket did not appear to be blown anywhere so I think the rings are stuck. And there is some scoring but I don’t think enough to keep it from running pretty good. I’ll put pictures below. The fluid in the cylinders is PB blaster.

Motor needs to come apart if you are hoping to enjoy operating it.

Im thinking may get a few more good years out that block before the gasket sealing surface is compromised. But as mentioned it really should come apart to help unsure any chance at long term survival.
If you don’t break anything you may get away with reusing everything after its been cleaned up. Of course it’s not the right way to do this but it could be a fun project for short money.

maybe... some high temp epoxies can be used just near the rims dents to help support the gasket surfaces

The very FIRST question I ask people that are selling their outboards is.....HAS IT EVER BEEN IN SALT WATER?

Is they say yes I run in the other direction.

It definitely appears to have been in salt water and I live on the coast of MS so I’d be surprised if it hasn’t. Would I be better using parts I need then parting it out?

I run my motors in salt and brackish water only. What is the best maintenance for an old E-rude/ Johnson after every use to prevent this corrosion?

Hook up the muffs and give it a good fresh water rinse.

Motor in picture #1 has scored cylinder.-----It will run but not the way it can run.----Motor needs to come apart.

You may be able to get it to run long enough to unload it on some sucker, as some might do, but it won't last. It will leak or blow head gaskets due to the loss of the aluminum material that normally surrounds the cylinder liner. A well-known problem with salt water motors here on the Gulf Coast. Yes, we have tried all the magic cures such as epoxy and welding. Won't work for long.

What I haven't tried is machining the area to accept a filler ring of some sort. Hm-m-m-m-m?

Yeah between the scoring and loss of gasket surface I probably won’t try any kind of rebuild. It’s has pretty much all of the parts so I may pull the 1978 motor apart to see why it’s low on compression and maybe make a good motor out of it. Is there anything to flush through them that is known to prevent or stop corrosion in addition to fresh water?
