Hey again guys, purchased a 1977 Evinrude 9.9 model 10755A electric start motor today. heard it run in a tank and runs perfect. when i got it home i put it in forward and then neutral but prop still engaged in forward. Cant even get the shifter go into reverse. Is this a common problem with the 9.9 or 15? Kinda hoped you guys could point me in the right direction. I've owned lots of outboards but never a 9.9 so could use some advice. Thanks in advance

Was the motor running while you were trying to get it into reverse?

Sometimes the gears need to be moving in the lower unit to shift into the gears, remove the plugs and try spinning the the prop with your foot and shift it while the prop is turning and see if it will shift properly.

No, that shouldnt hurt it. Sometimes when the motor isn't runnng it can be difficult to find forward or reverse but if you rotate the prop by hand it will pop in. I thought this may be what was happening but if you tried it running I guess not. Can you get it into reverse while not running?

No i took the hood off and see the 3 "indents" on the linkage. only forward and neutral. when i start it, it's in forward just stuck there. on another note whats the black "plunger" thing with power wires to it under the linkage?

Mine doesn't have such a device under the shift linkage but it doesnt have electric start. If I were to hazzard a guess I would say it's part of the E start system.
