hi i just got this boat that has a 1977 evinrude 85 85793s. i cant to get the engine to start and stay running unless i spray gas into the carbs. i rebuilt the fuel pump and tried it, same thing. i just rebuilt the carbs and cleaned the jets, still the same. so im a little stumped on how to get this thing running. i changed out all my fluids and put in new plugs. any help would be great. thanks

how about the connections?......the lil o-rings inside get old and leak.

have you tried to run it at home and the lake or just at the lake?........ any difference between in and out of the water......... you can get some muffs from walmart for $5 to keep from ruining a trashcan.

did you clean/rebuild the carbs as per instructions on this site?..... fuel pump too?

Re: 1977 85hp evinrude wont start

i have it in the yard on muffs trying to start it. i did follow the procedure here on the forum on the rebuild. i didnt have the lever fully up when trying to start it, only bout half way. i will try that in the morning. i was reading a engine book that ways saying that there could be a vac leak in 5 different places that would prevent the pump from fully working. how often is this a problem?

which little o-rings are you talking about?

Remember that all that the fuel pump does is fill the float bowls at the bottom of the carburetors. The vacuum from the pistons pulls the fuel air mix through the catrburetors, it is not pushed at all by the pump.

i think there is fuel going to the float bowls becaused when i pulled off one of the fuel lines gas drained out from the carb. where is the most common vac leak?

Those are exhaust vents and a little bit of water should be spitting out of them. When was the impeller last changed? If you don't know or it has been two years I would change it before you try to take the boat out. No sense ruining a good motor on that small part.

Those are exhaust relief ports that should have a little water spitting out with some exhaust whenever the engine is running for a minute or more. The quantity of water should increse as the RPM rise and as the thermostat opens.
