1977 60hp mariner not running

i have a 1977 60hp mariner that it is not running here is the things that i have done to it replaced the stator with coils because i wasnt getting any sparks. now it gets sparks and i got it to crank but now it wont even try to run. still getting sparks and even if i shoot some carb cleaner in it to try to get it to crank all it does is backfires out of the exhaust. i dont know what else to do to it or what seems to be the problem. when i got it to run i hooked the muffs to it and gave it a little gas and she started acting up and then just quit i noticed my shift cable had toren out of the the wire housing and i couldnt get it to back in to neutral. but it does shift fine manualy. ordered another set of cables for it as well. but why wont it atempt to run or crank or anything like that what can it do or need to check. the spark plugs were a little wet but not much please help thanks kris

First dont use carb cleaner to start an outboard, it washes away the oil from bearings and cylinder wall, which ruins a motor. Use a 50:1 gas/oil mixture in a spray bottle to attempt to start it with. Second do a compression test. If its back firing out the exhaust you have a timing issue. Not sure what ignition system this has. Id start working on the starting system first since you need to check compression. By the way ``crank'' simply means the motor turns over when you hit the key, it does not mean it tries to start. Does the motor crank over well when you hit the key? Not sure if you understand that or if your wording got messed up in your first post.

I done a compression test and both cylinders are good we had it running when i replaced the stator under the flywheel checked the power packs and they are firing but now when i try to turn the key all it does it spins and when i shoot some cleaner ( which i wont use now thanks for the tip good point ) and choke it she backfires could removing the flywheel cause this how can i fix the timing. Or what other things should i do to fix the problem and how do i stop it from doibg this.

Well back firing indicates a timing issue. Check to make sure you didnt mix up the primary wires off the switch box to the coils.

When you say spin do you mean the the starter is turning the motor over or the starter is just spinning?

How did you remove the flywheel?? Hopefully not by the small red bolts on top.

the starter turns the motor. we removed the top nut of and bumped it lightly with a rubber hammer and it came off.this motor is a two cylinder and the powerhead has not been removed.the stator that is underneath the flywheels the coils were burned up and so was the wiring when we replaced it she fired right up now she wont even make an attempt to start (run) its all started when i gave it some gas and it spit and spuddered and hasnt crank since that was a week ago

Ok do a spark test. You should get a bright blue spark on both cylinders. 7/16 gap on your spark tester.

When you say backire do you mean spit and sneeze? A backfire will sound like a loud gunshot. Lean condition will cause a motor to pop and cough.

When was the motor running last? disregard what i said about changing firing order.........that was for a 3 cylinder 70 horse. I misread your title

done a spark test and it does spark a bright blue spark on both cylinders. and it does sound like a gunshot when it backfires. the motor was running this past spring and then the wire on the stator some how melted and then it has not ran since then but last week when i replaced the stator she ran fine no problem till i gave it gas now it does nothing.

hmmmmmm. Sounds like its definantly way out of time. Did you double check the connections to both of your coils? if you reversed plug wires or primary wires to the coil it would be firing on bottom dead center for both. Or it is possible you might have a sheared flywheel key. You could try reversing the spark plug wires on each plug in case you have somthing reversed. Then see if it runs.
