I just bought this motor and we all have heard it a million times , IT RUNS. YEPH, Like ****. Rebuilt carbs, new fuel pump. Runs on choke , take choke off it dies now. The guy handed me this spring and said his son took carbs off to clean and forgot where spring went. Great. Normally when motor runs when choke is on it is not getting enough fuel. Cannot figure it out, any help is greatly appreciated. Can't go walleye fishing here in Ohio till i get this motor running. spring.jpg

That spring holds choke OPEN at full throttle.---Nothing to do with your issue at the moment.----Did you clean high speed jets.---They are screwed into bottom of float bowl.----Did you soak carburetors in a strong cleaner?

The float bowls being empty may be pointing to your problem. Quite possibly the fuel in there evaporated, leaving a thin layer of gunk and that gunk is very capable of clogging all the narrow passages. I would let the carbs soak in carburetor cleaner over night and then blow them out with compressed air making sure that all those narrow passages are wide open. Doing a rebuild would even be better.

110 and 105 compression. Cleaned bowl jets with carb cleaner and air. No change

Your compression values should be around 140 PSI or higher.----I would remove cylinder head to investigate.---Sorry , perhaps you bought a " trouble motor "

If you can't idle, I'd focus on the idle circuit. You'll need to order carb kits and remove the plugs #4 and #5, and clean up the idle jet #38. The carb kits will come with replacement plugs.

idling...fuel goes up the side of the carb into a " drip" chamber under the top plug...

then an old style carb using needle points to adjust the fuel flow... check the side channel route to the top it is very narrow...make certain all passages are open , carb cleaned and air blown. Replace the new top plug by tapping down gently and I seal the rim with clear nail polish

I'm pretty sure I have the carburetors cleaned properly. I think I have identified the problem, what is missing on the carbs I was wrong about compression 145 150

they look clean "outside" but what about the inside ??

...did you check the top side idle chamber under the dime size plug.

it has 2 or 3 small drip holes to feed fuel at idle and if clogged idles is affected.

see video as an alternative to removing the dime size plug at minute 05:40

your carb has no needles ... see comment " old style carb using needle points to adjust the fuel flow"

that was on older carbs you have a small "orifice plug" see #38 and you have a fix orifice on the High speed fuel supply see #35 in post#11
