1977 55 evinrude

Hey All! New to boating world, and have a question some of you might know. I have a 1977 55 evinrude and i replaced the ignition switch because previous owner lost the keys. After doing so, i hooked up a good battery to it to see if it would turn over and all i got was a clicking noise. Any ideas there?? Also when replacing the ignition, a ball bearing came out from inside the throttle lever and i cant figure out where it goes. Any suggestions?? Thanks on advance!!

Provided the battery was actually good.....check all of the connections (battery, solenoid, starter) are in good condition and are clean/tight. If that checks out, you may have a suspect solenoid.

What style of control do you have? pic?

What kind of control do you mean? Its on a Mon Ark boat and its electric start. I know the starter works because a friend of mine hooked it direct and it engaged. However, like you said it could be the solenoid. Thanks again for all your help!

The motor control unit at the helm......there are a couple of different styles......yours may look like this......

At a glance, #30 is the only ball bearing i see.

If you have already jumped the solenoid with success then it is the culprit.

I was just recently able to find an original manual for my 1975 55hp Johnson on ebay.

Worth a look on ebay for both manuals provided you dont mind preloved ones......way cheaper than Mr Cook.
