It may be a long shot, but before you throw in the towel there is a good mechanic at Lakeshore in hampton. Take your lower unit to him and let him check it out. If it's bad he will not bs you about it. If it's good you could still salvage your boat plans and resto of your tri hull. You want to ask for Chad. He will pressure test the lower unit for you if the gear case seems good. I had to replace the lower unit on my Chrysler last year and they were the only ones in our area with a suitable replacement. Cost me $400, but it was worth it to get on the water.
