My top end on my 1979 85 Evinrude is tired, will only run on 3 cyl now. Compression on that cylinder was showing signs when last checked, only about 92lbs, rest of the cyl's were anywhere from 100-115lbs.

I have found a 1976 115 Johnson witha rebuild powerhead but needs a bottom end. I would only buy it if I can swap the bottom end from my tired motor.

Could I take the bottom end from my 1979 85 Evinrude (which is actually off of a '78 115hp) and put it on the 1976 115hp?

My guess is yes, though I'm unsure if the '76 is electric shift or not.

Also...is the 1976 115hp pre-CDI? Not sure if I want to get into a motor without CDI.

Re: 1976 V4 bottom end swap

All J/E 1976 V4 recreational motors used a hydraulically assisted lower unit that shifts the opposite of your 1979. The gearcase will not interchange.

There is very little on the 1976 V4 that is compatible with the 1979 motor. Both have CD ignition but they have very different components.
