1976 Thundercrat Titan will not start

This is my first time trying something like this so please be patient. My husband and I puchased a 1976 Thundercraft Titan with a Chrysler Magnumpower outboard motor. We have fixed the steering, carburetors, throttle cables and a few other small problems and have moved to the ignition. It will not start! We have traced wiring and found one bare wire to the Ignition Box(I think that it the proper term) and tried to hook up a new harness and switch but it still will not start. If we start it at the soleniod the motor cranks and runs like a dream. I am out of ideas and have read a lot of postings. Does anyone have a possible solution? Thank you in advance for any help that you may be able to provide.

Hello Maria and welcome to iboats. Please post the model number. It should be located below the carbs near the latching assembly. Also if you cant find the model number is would help to know what horse power the motor is. It is common for a wire to be hanging near the ignition switch. These are usually for wires to components such as tach, speedometer and a ground to the motor. If certian accesories are not used the wire typically is left unused.<br /><br />First thing the motor needs to be in neutral to start. On the starboard side of the motor there is a small switch attached to the shift linkage assembly on the side of the powerhead. This is called a neutral interlock switch. If this switch is not aligned correctly or is not working power will not go to the starter solinoid and the starter will not spin. This cicuit starts at the ignition switch connected to the S position on the switch and should be a yellow wire. It goes to the terminal strip on the motor which then goes to a yellow black wire to the solinoid. <br /><br />If you take a jumper cable and connect one end to the plus lead on the battery and the other end to where the yellow black wire (smaller of the three wires) is going to the starter solinoid the starter should spin. If it does the solinoid is good and power is not getting to the solinoid.<br /><br />Please post your model number and you HP. It is easier to find the correct wiring diagram for your motor that way.

Thank you for your reply. The model # is 757HO and the serial # is 18754 and it is a 75 horseporwer. I have one more odd question. THe guy we bought it from had just changed the oil and was starting some work on it. We are having trouble finding the oil fill of all things. We can find the plug and know where the oil fill should be but ???? crazily enough can't recognize it. (I know it sounds like we don't know motors but we do know auto motors.

Two different lower units for chryslers on drain and fill. Both should be on the port side. Yours is probably side by side above the prop. The head on the screw should be slotted and about the size of a dime. The forward hole is the Fill and the aft one is the Drain. The drain is on the lower part of the lower unit about even with the prop towards the front.<br /><br />Other type lower unit has one hole about 4 inches higher then the prop and another on the top part of the skeg. These are on the port side as well.
