Greetings all,
I recently bought a 1976 Ranger that needs some attention; my boy's call it the ?ugly duck?. The gel coat is just about gone and I can feel the metal flakes in places. It must have been stored uncovered for a long time. I'm looking for tips to paint it on a budget. I really don't want to sink a ton of money into it, but would like it to look good. It?s a great running boat with a 150 Merc, Thanks in advance for the info.

Ok how to paint a boat cheap :D.

Step 1. Buy lots of sandpaper .

Step 2. Buy Rustoleum in Quarts or gallons ( usually quarts is plenty ) and buy some high density 4" foam rollers and some foam brushes and get to work .

Feel free to check out my thread or any number of the other starcraft threads for more info on the joys of Rustoleum :D. You wont need the Zinc that all of us with Tin Cans needed :D.

So painting over fiberglass is OK? I don't plan to keep the boat more that 2 or 3 years. I hope to upgrade to a newer boat by then. I'm just getting into boating and wanted to start out with something that was cheap. :)

Use wet/dry sandpaper sold at NAPA for the sanding - sand using water and the blackpaper with a grit of about 300-400. I also add soap to my water so that during the sanding phase I remove all the oils on the boat. After the initial sanding thoughly sand with just water and clean the surfaces to remove all sanding sludge.

You can spray with a spray gun, paint with brushes(see roll and point on this site). or use a rattle can.

I have an automotive background so I paint with a spray gun and urethane enamel from coronado paints - SCAT RUST is the name brand.

RUST SCAT looks like it's for metal? Does it work well on fiberglass or should I use an automotive paint? I understand that most cars are made of metal, just curious about how it would stand up to boating.
