Hey guy's I have a 76 Mercury 1150 PO unhooked some wires and discarded rubber lines and fuel lines. I was wondering if anyone could help till I get a manual with these few wires. there is the main plug on side of motor with a little orange wire not hooked up. Any one know where it should go? Here are a few pics to use as visual.

you can see the small orange wire that's not hooked up I think I have the rest correct. Not sure about the larger blue and orange though that hook to side of power head

The orange one doesn't go anywhere, it's not used! Tape over the end and secure it out of the way.

The orange and blue ones are correct they go to the rectifier. Someone has mounted new wires there as they are supposed to be Yellow with a Red stripe but there are 2 wires that connect to them that come down from the stator under the flywheel on the top of the motor.

Everything else looks good!

also, your black ground wire should be bolted at that bolt on the lower cowling next to the plug. Refer to my photo......

Thanks a lot for the help ClassyGlassy and the reference pic that was a big help.:D Man the stuff a PO can destroy. I just removed the flywheel to find I have a missing Alternator Stator.

Explains the missing two wires where the orange and blue are on the side of the power head.

Time to find a used one of those I guess and change some wire colors.:D Again ClassyGlassy thanks for the quick response and great pic.

You're welcome! If anything else comes up in the meantime, I have a Seloc Manual that covers drawings and specs. So if you need some help seek me out or email me at:

Mine is actually a 1500 but the wiring and colors are all the same.

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

Hey ClassyGlassy, Thanks so much man, got to love iboats. Yea I ordered the online version of the Seloc manual yesterday after looking at it, I am not that happy with it. I can't even find a complete diagram pic of the motor showing all the parts, That would be helpful. I am not only missing the alternator/Stator I am also missing the complete fuel pump. all the hoses need to be replaced as well, even the ones that are missing. God I hate when people mess with something they have no business in doing so. Well off to the parts store to get some wiring, connectors, and a few nuts and bolts that were missing as well. Then I need to make some calls see if I can locate a used fuel pump and alternator/Stator.
Oh by the way I did a compression test yesterday as well I had.
#1 150psi
#2 150psi
#3 150psi
#4 150psi
#5 155psi
#6 150psi
Guess I got lucky in that respect.:D

Again thanks for the help I'll keep you posted.;)

 Nope I didn't. Oh well it probably wasn't correct anyway seeings how the PO already removed the Alternator/Stator. We will get it back right, hopefully it can't be too hard to do. S&^$%**#^$%!@%#$

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

don't worry about reference marks you can get close to TDC by removing the #1 spark plug and rotating the motor until the piston is TDC! There's an entire procedure for it in the Seloc Manual.

Try here for your parts:

Give Larry a call, he's a really cool old guy that lives and breathes outboard motors! He's got your part and it goes out quickly........

Yea that's what I figured too ClassyGlassy. Anyway looking at the wiring diagrams for this motor, It seems some wires are out of place according to this diagram. Take a look at the .pdf file. I made a note about it. Tell me what you guy's think. I am thinking mine might be wrong.
Click the link to see it.

That brown wire is the signal wire for your tach..... it can be wired at either place! If it doesn't send the signal at one, then go to the other.

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

Once again ClassyGlassy Thanks a bunch. Man you know these motors it seems.:D but you do have a 1500 good to know your boat motor.
I think I found the parts that are missing. Of course used Alternator/Stator, Fuel pump assembly, OH and a Mercury Key for my controls. I need to replace all the fuel lines too. Once I get this stuff I can see if this baby will fire, and or maybe even run. crossing fingers.:D

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

just a reminder, as I'm sure you already know, but make sure you fog those cylinders or put some straight 2 cycle oil into each of those cylinders and turn it over for about 30 seconds without spark plugs before you fire it up! Lube that sucker after sitting for so long!!!!

I would get new plugs too, L76V Champions.........

And when you replace that fuel line, go with a Marine Grade fuel line as it has thicker walls than regular automotive fuel line and less likely to burn through in a fire.....just to be safe!

When you get a chance take a close-up pic of your carbs so I can see if they're the regular side bowl or the backdrag carbs. If there's a small black cross-over tube about 1/8" or 3/16" then they are the backdrag and you need to remove that tube, replace with NEW tube, and stick a .177 BB into each tube to block it off!

Trust me;)

Hey ClassyGlassy, Thanks for all the very informed knowledge about this Motor I really appreciate. Here's a close up on the carb if this isn't good enough let me know I can take more.
P5140053.jpg

Looks like from your explanation about the type of carbs. I have the backdrag type. Whatever that means. Anyway great news for this motor I fogged it up real good all cylinders let her sit overnight turned it over with plugs out next morning then fogged it up real good again, let sit few hours fogged again. Then when I went to turn it over with the plugs in she fired up :D I shut it down immediately. Man what a surprise.
Anyway I still need a fuel pump and stator, replace all fuels lines and any rubber hoses that need be. Also Plan on taking the carbs off and soaking for a few days in carb cleaner bath, then putting carb kits on. I think I made the right decision to keep this motor and do the check to see what shape it's in.:D

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

These backdrag carbs are great, VERY easy to work on, however, that crossover tube needs to be blocked off. It was a design to economize and save fuel economy at mid range. This system has caused some motors to fail from running too lean. Also notice that on the fuel bowl cover where the tube goes to there is a threaded hole on the side there.....there is a metering jet that goes there that allows air in to reduce pressure in the fuel bowl. REPLACE THEM!!!!! I'm sure running without is probably O.K. but I would get the right ones put into it........

VERY cool that it fired up, these "Towers of Power" are the best power to weight ratio motors EVER built.....they don't build them even close anymore!!

Nice. With a bit of help you'll end up with essentially a new motor :)
