I have a Mercury 115 that seemed to be running fine but had a carb leaking fuel so I took it to the local shop for a carb rebuid and while it was there they said 4 of my 6 cylinders compression were below Merc specs and technically I had a blown engine and needed a rebuild . I'm confused, it still runs and starts great, any suggestions...

I just had my compression checked and the results were: 1>130 2-6>125.I don't know if that helps you or not, but compare the numbers. Mine was said to be fine.

Ya.. get a $25 compression tester at Sears and test yourself and post results here for advice.

Also... de-carb the engine once a year with "Mercury Power Tune" to avoid sticky rings. If you don't know the lasty time it was done - do it twice in one week and again in a month.

-W

WJ,
With 6 cylinders you may notice it runs ok even with low compression on a cylinder or two (may lack power though). The rule of thumb is that you want to see even compression on all six, and within 10 to 15% of each other maximum.

I'd get a second opinion before giving up on that motor. Find out the specific compression values they measured for each cylinder.

Good luck.

[edit] typing above while clams was posting.
