1976 mercruiser 165 straight 6

I have just bought a 1976 23 ft crestliner and i am new to inboard/outboards it runs and starts just fine. But at full throtel it will only reach 3500 rpms with only me in it and only 2900 rpms with more than 2-3 people on it. It will not plane with more than 2 poeple on it is this normal or do i have a problem any advise is much appreceated thank you for looking :D

To answer your question -- No that is not normal. It was last tuned up when? Are you lugging around a boat full of water soaked foam? Are you sure the engine is making full power? Are you sure the throttle is opening all the way? Does the boat have the correct prop for the application. Many people think an engine is running ok when in fact it has one or more dead cylinders. A boat that old may have an engine that is simply "tired". After all it is only 42 years old.

Thanx 4 the link to that page i ran a compression check 1-2 are low the others are fine were just ganna hope that it is a bad head gasket and not in need of a complete rebuild but either way it will be fixed sooner than later anyway thanks again ziggy may need more help soon happy boating:cool:
