Install a fuse that isnt blown and then jump the starter solenoid from the red wire to the yellow wire with jumper cables or a screwdriver that you dont care about and make sure it is in the run position it will probably start if it has spark and fuel

I don't see that fuse in your schematic. Where is it located? My 1975 850 doesn't have an engine fuse.

Merc's of that age didn't have fuses. It begs the question of what else was changed.

Original wiring engine harnesses of that age usually have failing insulation by now.

The most likely place for a wire to rub raw and short is inside the MerControl. You might start there.

There was no fuse on the battery on motors of that era.

Check the insulation on the engine harness and boat harness. If that is not it, you will need to open up the MerControl and see if any wires are touching and rubbed raw.

I would think that the choke solenoid + started used together would pull over 30 amps.

Choke solenoids are 5A or so. Starter solenoids are about the same. Starters can be 150-200A or even more. Starter cables are never fused.
