Just bought a 1976 20 hp merc on the cheap. It was converted from remote to a tiller (supposedly ran but....). Motor has gone unused for several years. The tiller throttle control won't open farther than start (in other words no full throttle). The shifter sometimes refuses to go into reverse. Also is Seloc a good manual to purchase? Would the online subscription service be worthwhile? Is this too many questions on 1 thread? I'm a newbee. Thanks!!!!

Welcome to iboats. Lots of good guys here.

Can't help with the motor but a manual.
I bought a Seloc and would not recommend it.
Too generic and poor quality pictures.
Like the old Chilton manuals for cars, one size fits all.
Ford - 1950 - 1999. Covers all models.

That was my 2 cents.

There is a throttle limiter on the shift linkage beneath the carh
b and it sounds like it is either sticking or out of adjustment. Even though the cost of a OEM manual is high it is the only one worth buying, check enay.

Ive got the Seloc Volume 1. 1965 - 1991. Seloc manuals are generic as some say but the manual mentioned above uses the 20hp as a general example. If you buy a specific 20hp manual then thats it. its good for the the 20hp. if you've got a generic manual and at a later date you get another Merc you aint got to buy another manual. Ive got a 20hp Merc as well im fixing up, it was hard to get into reverse. I was told it was the lower unit and got it stripped down (Wrecked) by a marina. Thing is there wasn't anything wrong with the lower unit. So before you go stripping the LU down chech other things out first. You have to have the prop turning before it will ingage (Turn by hand if not on boat, pull spark plug caps off first though). Theres a mechanism on the swivel unit. A hook thats grabs the swivel bar, is that engaging ok.

Re: 1976 Merc 200 - 20Hp

Thanks everyone! You pointed me in the right direction Laddies but found it the spark advance stuck. When I got it unstuck it went to wide open in forward (love silicone spray). The reverse problem is a little trickier. Mac thxs for your advice! I turned the flywheel a few times and it slipped into reverse. There was a little plate on the mounting bracket (that I read after I found it) which said the engine should be running before shifting gears. So maybe everything is OK? Mac thxs for advice on the manual. If it uses the 20 hp for the illustrations then maybe it will work for me. They also have an online subscription, anyone use that? Mac what all did you do to your engine? I'm thinking rebuild the carb and new impeller. Suggest anything else? Oh yeah, I'm missing a kill button. I think I saw 1 for sale somewhere but the 1 on this motor is missing. How would I wire it up? thxs All

Ive got a Merc 1973 so the wiring may be slightly differant but basically. Theres a Orange (Low tension ) wire from the switch box that normally goes to the stop switch. When electric start and remote is used this wire is rewired to the wiring harnesss connector on the other side of the engine then back to the stop switch. Looking at mine theres 4 inch of wire from the switch box then a connector (Taped junction), id break the connection here and run the wire from the switch box to the stop switch. Tape the end of the other wires up and tuck away safely. Then if you get a remote unit in the future you've just got to join the two wires gain.
